 | Walked
up red-legged partridge (Spain) |

|
The Spanish Red Legged Partridge is a well
proportioned, very handsome game bird that has challenged
shooters for many years. Their speed and height varies depending
on the wind and terrain. They vary their flight pattern
more frequently than Scottish Grouse. Many argue, that properly
presented in hilly terrain, the red partridge is the most
challenging game bird in the skies. The red legged partridge's
natural range includes Spain and Portugal, except northern
coastal strip and higher Pyrenees, much of west, central
and southern France, Corsica, Elba and northern Italy. Their
habitat is mainly dry, rocky hillsides like other Alectoris
partridges.
WMH is organizing walked up shooting using Mani v.d. Reiteralm
as our pointing guide dog. In our terrain, these birds will
barely hold on a close point. Making the bag limit of eight
per day requires excellent nose, pointing and guiding manners
from our dogs, as well as a sportsman who is a good shot
on fast moving targets. The hunting ground we use is located
in the Toledo province, the heartland of the red partridge
and just a 60 minute drive from Madrid. The grounds are
famous for some of the highest density of partridges in
Spain and are next to where the 2003 World Pointing Dog
Championships took place. They feature a well balanced mix
of wild and reared birds released in early summer. Hunting
season lasts from October to February.

Mallard duck hunting (Spain) | Within one hour
driving distance from Madrid, WMH has an arrangement with one of Spain´s
most experienced duck hunting organizers, Ignacio Guinea. Ignacio´s family
owns a splendid ranch in the Castilla Leon region which features 5 separate deep
water lagoons with dense reed vegetation. Shooting takes place from small islands
within the lagoons and typically involve groups of 6-8 hunters. A typical bag
will consist of 300-400 ducks in a 2-3 hour early morning shooting session so
there is plenty of water retrieving work available for the dogs. Shooting is followed
by an open-air aperitif and a typical Spanish lunch at the historical Guinea family
estate. Smaller groups can be arranged through WMH and pricing is available upon
request.

 | Perdiz,
duck, dove and pigeon shooting (Argentina) | The
Entre Rios Province, located 90 minutes by small airplane from Buenos Aires International
airport, is one of the ultimate hunting destinations. WMH works with one of the
leading outfitters, Altos del Parana, who own some beautiful lodge cabins right
on the banks of the Parana river outside of the town of La Paz. No further
than 20 minutes from the lodge, pigeons and doves are plentiful and those with
an affection for large bags may down over 1000 birds in a single day per hunter.
Pigeons and doves are considered a pest by local farmers and authorities permit
their shooting all year round. Duck shooting is famous for the great
variety of species and abundance of incredibly colourful birds. Duck shooting
typically takes place close to the Parana river or in watered rice fields which
can be accessed easily by four wheel drive. A typical bag would consist of 20
to 30 ducks per shooting session and hunter. Season is from May to August.
The perdiz in Argentina resembles the combination of European partridge and
quail and is an excellent practice bird for the dogs as it holds well on point.
Altos de Parana owns some well trained bird specialists - mainly pointers and
German Shorthairs - but shooting over Weimaraners can be arranged for, too. Dogs
get the unique opportunity to practice pigeon and duck retrieving as well as pointing
perdices on a single day. Prices and availability upon request.
