Our stud dog: Legend's Mani v.d. Reiteralm

Legend's Mani v.d. der Reiteralm descends from US Weimaraner Gunnar Magnum Silvershot and Cora von der Schelmelach, an import from Germany. Cora is a highly accomplished hunting dog in the USA. Her puppies have produced outstanding results in hunting tests. Her origins go back to the kennel of Uwe Stricker, a well known Weimaraner breeder in Germany. In selecting this breeding combination, Virginia Alexander placed great emphasis on mixing the complimentary characteristics of US and German bloodlines, thus ensuring genetic variety for future breeding efforts. Judy Balog, owner of Mani's father, wrote an article in the WCA Magazine, December 1998 issue:

"Gunnar made history last fall when he became a Prize I maximum score (204) NAVHDA Utility dog, which qualified him for the very prestigious NAVHDA Invitational. On September 6, 1998, Gunnar became the first Weimaraner to attain the NAVHDA Versatile Champion (VC). For anyone not familiar with this grueling, all day test, it has 14 areas of judgment. Obedience, blind duck retrieves, pointing, honoring, and use of nose to name just a few. With a score of 187, Gunnar once again proved to me what an amazing dog he is. The first of his offspring tested with NAVHDA receiving a Prize I maximum score (112) in natural ability."

Accomplishments

When he was a little over 6 weeks, Mani v.d. Reiteralm was selected by Virginia to become a "model" for New York Weimaraner photographer William Wegman. William was so pleased with Mani's looks and manners that he not only featured him on the title page of the 2004 William Wegman Puppy calendar, but also inside the calendar and several other recent Wegman publications.

On the hunting side, Mani v.d. Reiteralm has become one of the most highly decorated hunting Weimaraners in Germany during 2003. Earning scores of 66, 190 and 336 points in the three major hunting trials, places Mani among the very top performers countrywide.

The leading Spanish Hunting magazine "Perros de Caza" featured Mani on the cover with headlines for December 2003 and wrote:

"Mani impressed the judges and spectators by displaying a systematic and
thorough field search pattern, covering the terrain from edge to edge. He was awarded a rating of "Excellent" in pointing, guiding, and steadiness to shot and fall. …..The dream of every dog trainer is to achieve the maximum possible 336 point score in the German Master Hunting Exam (VGP) which demonstrates the perfection of the dog's usefullness in every hunting situation. Very few dogs achieve maximum scores. Mani ended up being one of three to accomplish this goal, in what is the most complete and rigorous examination for versatile hunting dogs in the world."

In February 2005, Mani v.d. Reiteralm became the first Weimaraner ever to achieve a "very good" rating and "Honorary Mention" at the International Spring Field Trials in Spain. Competing with over 100 dogs from several countries, Mani surprised judges and spectators with a fast and wide search pattern, strong pointing manners and great physical condition. Mani´s performance was particularly encouraging as he was one of the only versatile trained and regularly hunted dogs competing against upland pointing and field trial specialists. At one point during the two week long event, Mani actually led the field and was nominated for a CACT rating but got unlucky when a hare positioned himself between his point and the bird provoking the latter´s flush.

Spain´s Spring Field Trials involve a 15 minute search, guide and point performance on wild red partridge in open fields of vast extension and with limited cover. Given the pronounced flushing instinct of the partridge in these conditions, only experienced dogs with wide search patterns, excellent noses and strong self-control when pointing and guiding have a chance to qualify. During February, partridges are joining up in couples and are protected by knee high cover which facilitates them holding better than earlier in the season.

However, given the extreme draught Andalucia is suffering since last fall, cover was dismal and only about 10% of dogs on any given day managed to qualify for the prestigious Spring Field Trialer title. Spanish Spring Field Trials are highly sought after by European dog professionals which consider them ideal for stud selection given the high demands placed on pointing manners. They also are a used to select the dogs which will present the national teams at the European and World Championships held later in the season.
